The National Theatre was built in the late 1800, mainly by Italian contractors, and was designed after the Paris Opera House. During its construction, the opulence and luxurious detail stood out like a sore thumb among the still underdeveloped town of San Jose. Europeans mocked this project by stating that the country of Costa Rica was actually a theatre surrounded by a village.
San Jose has obviously grown and developed over the years, but the National Theatre still stands out due to its elegance and beauty.
The inside of the theatre is adorned with pink marble, statues, murals and its three-story auditorium reserved only for elite performers and events. The inauguration of the National Theatre was said to present the German play Faust.
The National Theatre is open to visitors Monday through Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Guided tours are easily arranged and are a great option if you would like to get the most out of your visit. You might even be able to check out the sublevel and the 4th and 5th levels where all the behind the scene action takes place.
The National Theatre in Costa Rica is located between 2nd and 4rth Avenue between 3rd and 5th streets.
