There are two major cloud forests in Monteverde, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve . These two cloud forests offer over 20 kilometers of combined trails from which visitors can observe the region diverse wildlife.
The story behind Monteverde and its reserves began back in 1972 when scientist George Powell and Wilford Guindon went to the Tropical Science Center and proposed that Monteverde be a protected area. A little over 800 acres were purchased and this became the starting point for the Monteverde preserve.
A few years later, a Quaker community in the area joined forces and added their 1300 acres to the cause. The Tropical Science Center agreed to act as the institution responsible of managing and protecting the area. As of today, it continues to provide financial and human resources in order to protect and manage the preserve. Monteverde preserve currently sits on over 25,000 acres.
A number of lodges and hotels in Monteverde are available in the nearby area which offers tourists spectacular views and peaceful trails for a relaxing stay.
