Kids Take Part in 3rd Environmental Festival Held in San Isidro Del General

This year Environmental Festival in Perez Zeledon displayed the Birds, their Habitat and Protection theme. The event was dedicated to Alexander Skutch, a famed ornithologist who in 1941 bought a piece of land in Costa Rica rain forest in order to observe the neotropical birds.

Over 100 elementary students took control of the San Isidro central park to paint colorful bird species on the park sidewalks. Before hitting the sidewalks with their crayons in hand, the children carefully listened to a quick yet concise lecture about environmental conservation and the protection birds and their habitats require.

The children parents also participated and supported this municipality gesture in educated the young ones. Children will also participate in the planting of over 2,500 trees in Perez Zeledon.

The legacy left by Mr. Skutch inspired the town he lived in to promote the protection of the region?s birds and environment. Mr. Skutch was described by his Pittsburgh National Aviary curator of birds, Jim Bonner, as one of the most famous unknown men in science.

At just 8 days from his 100th birthday, Mr. Skutch passed away in 2004 leaving a legacy parallel to that of John James Auduborn.

Skutch property was left to be run by Costa Rica Tropical Science Center and is available to international researchers, students, naturalists and birdwatchers. Finca Los Cusingos is located in Costa Rica?s southern pacific region in San Isidro del General, near Dominical Beach hotel Cuna del Angel .

The Costa Rican Border Police has struggled for years in keeping the country borders safe with the limited budget they were assigned. Several border areas had to be left unattended and guard shifts extended to double and even triple shifts.

However, the Ministry of Interior and Police has recently signed an agreement in which the Border Police will now be part of their division. The signing of the agreement was headed by the Minister of Security, Janina del Vecchio .

The Border Police will now count with the Public Force policemen for a more reliable and controlled border watch. The Border Police will also be able to take advantage of other resources available by this division.

As for the maritime borders, these will continue to be under the watch of the National Coastguard Service as well as the Air Surveillance Service.

This move will help improve the country safety in controlling illegal entrances from the bordering countries. The income control from border fees will also be expected to go up due to more stations.
