Costa Rica main airport, the Juan Santamara, underwent remodeling in 2001. The Costa Rican government had granted concession of the airport to Alterra Partners. However, the government and Alterra have been involved in an ongoing feud for over 7 years in which the private company is accused of inefficiency and not meeting legal and financial agreements.
The government then decided to seek other companies that might be interested in administrating the airport. Among the new candidates, the Houston Airport System Development Corporation (HASDC) stood out. They have shown there interest in managing the Juan Santamaria Airport despite the legal and financial baggage.
It seems that the Juan Santamaria Airport is a strategic location which will complete the company plans to unite America. This airport company operates 3 terminals in Houston and the airport in Quito, Ecuador.
HASDC has about 18 technicians in Costa Rica that are stationed exclusively for meeting with government officials to discuss plans and answer any questions or doubts the Costa Rican government might have. Officials are currently writing all necessary reports which are to be presented to the Civil Aviation Counsel as well as the country Government Accountability Office for final approval.
Houston Airport plans to invest over $25 million in airport remodeling and expansion as well as take over its administration until 2026.
