As part of the San Jose Possible plan to expand and make San Jose a modern metropolis, new work was commenced today by a crew of the Municipality of San Jose.

San Jose Central Avenue Pedestrian Mall will be expanded at least 4 more blocks west in order to give pedestrians more space within the downtown area. The intention is to completely eliminate vehicle transit with the downtown area in the near future.

The Central Avenue Pedestrian Mall was the first one built in San Jose and is one of the busiest in the downtown area. This mall will be continued from the Central Market where it currently ends.

The streets have been closed off starting today and will be torn out in order to make way for bricks that will match those of the mall. The mall will be extended approximately 4 blocks and will end at the San Juan de Dios Hospital.

The Municipality of San Jose will also have their crew repair sections of the older mall which have been damaged over the years.

A walk down the central avenue mall is a real treat to tourists as they will be able to experience the every day life of the working Costa Rican. A number of shops are set up along the avenue as well as major local and foreign banks, fast food restaurants and offices.

Corners are usually occupied by small stands at which you can find really cheap t-shirts and other useless yet interesting articles. The pedestrian mall along the central avenue will also take you to the Plaza de la Cultura, Grand Hotel Costa Rica and the National Theatre.

Costa Rican authorities are promoting a new law which will allow for private airstrips to expand. Private airstrips in Costa Rica currently have a limitation as to the length of their landing strip.

The law only allows for these airstrips to cover and area no larger than 1,000 meters (3,280 ft). One of the members of Costa Rican congress has pointed out that the current regulation mistakenly restricts these landing spots due to limiting the tourism development in distinct coastal regions.

The proposed plan seeks to reform this section of the General Civil Aviation Law in order to allow for a better development. If the reform would to be approved, the private sector would have a much broader range of opportunities to offer modern domestic airports.

Costa Rica currently has 106 airports of which 66 are private. Costa Rican authorities hope to attract private investment and increase its domestic flight destinations and cut down on travel time within the country.

The private airport distribution throughout Costa Rica 7 provinces is the following:

  • San Jose + 1
  • Alajuela + 10Heredia + 2
  • Cartago + 1
  • Puntarenas + 14
  • Guanacaste + 23
  • Limon + 15
