It seems that even if you are in private property, the cutting down of important and precious tree species will be deemed illegal and penalized by law.
In the area of Santa Cruz in Guanacaste, residents accused a local land owner of cutting down Laurel and Guanacaste trees to sell its wood. Inspectors from the Ministry of Energy and Environment immediately stopped the illegal activity and confiscated a number of electric saws and processed wood.
The Laurel and Guanacaste trees are protected by law and the land owner will be summoned to the Environmental Tribunal for trial.
Guanacaste is located in Costa Rica’s northern region on the Pacific Coast. Authorities have doubled their watch in the region due to the large amount of constructions and investments taking place.
The increasing number of expatriates moving to the Guanacaste area for business has caused some serious deforestation as well as a strong impact on the environment. The above mentioned case is one of the many that have recently been brought to the authority’s attention.
The demand for precious and natural material has lead many unscrupulous individuals to ignore the law and try to make a quick buck without stopping to think about the future impact of their actions.
